Digital certificates

Your digital certificate

Digital certificates are used in conjunction with CSI by businesses to conduct the following activities securely online:

  • identify themselves to Government agencies
  • transact electronically with Government agencies, and
  • electronically sign the transactions conducted for the organisation

Generally, transactions that are signed with your digital signature are legally binding on your organisation.

Security of your digital certificate

Your digital certificate is protected from being used by someone else by:

  • A password

This unlocks your digital certificate so it can be used to create an electronic signature. You should keep your password secret.

  • CSI certificate store

This is an electronic container that securely holds your digital certificates and requires your password before it will retrieve your certificate.

Your digital certificate is similar to your credit card, your password is similar to your PIN number, and your certificate store is similar to your wallet.

You should ensure you store a backup copy of your digital certificate securely in a lockable cabinet.
