Your digital certificate
Digital certificates are used in conjunction with CSI by businesses to conduct
the following activities securely online:
- identify themselves to Government agencies
- transact electronically with Government agencies, and
- electronically sign the transactions conducted for the organisation
Generally, transactions that are signed with your digital signature are legally
binding on your organisation.
Security of your digital certificate
Your digital certificate is protected from being used by someone else by:
This unlocks your digital certificate so it can be used to create an electronic signature. You should keep your password secret.
This is an electronic container that securely holds your digital certificates
and requires your password before it will retrieve your certificate.
Your digital certificate is similar to your credit card, your password is
similar to your PIN number, and your certificate store is similar to your
wallet.
You should ensure you store a backup copy of your digital certificate securely
in a lockable cabinet.
